🐺 Elkhound Breeds

Elkhounds are ancient Nordic hunting dogs known for their wolf-like appearance, bravery, and loyalty. They were traditionally used to track and hold large game like elk, moose, and even bear. Today, they make excellent companions with a strong work ethic and a protective nature.

There are three main Elkhound breeds:

1. Norwegian Elkhound

The most well-known Elkhound.

  • Origin: Norway

  • Size: Medium (20–25 kg)

  • Coat: Thick, double-coated, grey with black-tipped hairs

  • Temperament: Confident, loyal, energetic, protective

  • Use: Hunting elk/moose, guarding, companionship

Key Traits

  • Excellent watchdog

  • Needs regular exercise

  • Intelligent but can be independent

  • Great with families but may be reserved with strangers

2. Swedish Elkhound (also called Jämthund)

Larger and more wolf-like than the Norwegian version.

  • Origin: Sweden

  • Size: Large (25–35+ kg)

  • Coat: Grey, thick, weather-resistant

  • Temperament: Calm, brave, loyal, steady

  • Use: Moose hunting, sledding, search and rescue

Key Traits

  • More laid-back than the Norwegian Elkhound

  • Very close to their family

  • Needs lots of physical and mental stimulation

  • One of Sweden’s national symbols

3. Black Norwegian Elkhound

A rarer, sleek black version of the Norwegian Elkhound.

  • Size: Medium (18–23 kg)

  • Coat: Solid black, dense, weatherproof

  • Temperament: Alert, active, loyal, more agile

  • Use: Hunting, watchdog, energetic companion

Key Traits

  • Slightly smaller and more nimble

  • Outstanding scent and tracking skills

  • Very people-oriented

  • Less common outside Scandinavia

  • Weekly brushing (more during shedding season)

  • Minimal trimming needed

Training Level

  • Smart but strong-willed

  • Respond best to positive, consistent training

  • Early socialisation is important

Health

Common issues may include:

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Eye disorders

  • Hypothyroidism

  • Thick coats can cause overheating in hot climates

Living Environment

  • Adapt well to cold climates

  • Need space to explore

  • Okay with apartments only if very well exercised
